In 2026, Knowsley Council purchased Whiston Woods from Forestry England. This is part of the council’s plan to extend cemetery provision for local residents.
As part of the council’s regular maintenance of this area, approximately 10 dangerous trees have been identified, which are located as part of an informal walkway to the north of the site.
The trees will be removed to ensure the safety of site users who walk, run or cycle around this part of the site.
The Council is mindful that these essential works will take place during the bird nesting season, and prior to any works commencing, appropriate ecological checks will be undertaken by a qualified ecologist to identify and assess potential risks to protected species and breeding or nesting birds.
If there is any evidence of active nests or other ecological constraints, works would be paused and appropriate mitigation implemented in line with ecological best practice and legal requirements. The site will continue to be monitored throughout the duration of the works.
Work is due to be carried out during week commencing 22 June 2026 and the works are expected to take 2 days.
Appropriate safety measures will be put in place whilst the works are carried out and site users are requested to be mindful of any safety notices placed on site.
