Knowsley Council is supporting the Royal Life Saving Society UK’s (RLSS UK) Drowning Prevention Week, helping young people stay safe when spending time in, on and around water.
As the weather gets warmer and with many young people finishing their exams, more people head outdoors, especially to rivers, lakes and open water. While it can look fun, these places can be much more dangerous than they seem.
Even strong swimmers can get into trouble. Cold water shock, powerful currents and hidden hazards under the surface can catch people out very quickly, even on sunny days.
Drowning Prevention Week is a national campaign sharing essential water safety advice for young people aged 5 to 17, so everyone can enjoy the water safely this summer.
What you need to know
If you’re planning to spend time near water:
- Think twice before jumping in. Cold water can seriously affect your breathing
- Be aware of strong currents and things you can’t see under the surface
- Always check for warning signs and follow safety advice
- Never swim alone. Stay with friends and keep an eye on each other
In an emergency
If someone is in trouble in the water:
- Call 999 and ask for the Fire and Rescue Service
- Don’t jump in. Try to help from the side (for example, by reaching or throwing something they can hold onto)
Remember: it only takes a few seconds for things to go wrong. Knowing the risks can help keep you and your friends safe.
