Hundreds of affordable new homes to be built in Halewood

by Cathy Sheel

Hundreds of affordable homes are set to be created in Halewood as part of the East of Halewood development that is currently under construction in the town.

The new affordable properties will be available to rent or purchase, through shared ownership, and will range from 1 and 2 bedroom apartments to three bed family homes.

The properties, being built by Bellway, Miller Homes and Redrow will form part of the East of Halewood development which will, when complete, comprise approximately 23% affordable properties.

Cllr Tony Brennan, Knowsley Council Cabinet Member for Regeneration & Economic Development said: “We know from talking to residents that lots of people want access to affordable homes in Knowsley, so it is great news that such a wide range of properties will be available in Halewood.

“Not only will this development deliver a range of good quality new homes, but it will enable further improvements in the local areas including enhancements to green spaces, local roads and services. That investment, coupled with the £15.3 million we have secured through the Government’s Levelling Up fund means that considerable changes and improvements will be coming to the local area in the coming months and years. It’s a really exciting time for Halewood and its residents.”

This first wave of affordable properties at the East of Halewood development will be available later this year and will include:

Bellway – 46 homes for affordable rent from one bedroom apartments to three bed homes; 57 homes for shared ownership including two and three bedroom homes

Miller Homes – 9 two bed apartments for affordable rent; 9 two bed apartments for shared ownership

Redrow – first phase of development will consist of 26 properties with two bedrooms and 9 properties with three bedrooms available for shared ownership. Note: the final number of Redrow Homes available as affordable housing will be significantly higher than this.

Developer contributions

As a result of the East of Halewood development, the Council has secured around £13m in Section 106 contributions from developers to help support the growth of Halewood.

The investment includes:

  • Up to £4.6 million to create new primary school places, of which £3.7m will be invested in Plantation Primary. This will return the school to a three-form entry and deliver 210 school places by 2025.
  • Up to £4.4 million on improvements to local roads and transport links.
  • Up to £1.1 million on outdoor sports.
  • Up to £1.1 million on early years childcare.
  • Up to £1 million on improvements to Finch Woods.
  • Up to £652,500 on subsidising a bus service through the site.
  • Up to £104,000 on improving local healthcare.

Knowsley Council was recently successful in securing £15.3m in Levelling Up funding for Halewood, which will support the expansion of the local district centre, improvements to greenspace and leisure facilities, as well as funding improvements to walking and cycling connectivity throughout the town and to employment areas.
