It is estimated that more than 10,000 pensioners in Knowsley will benefit from changes to the eligibility criteria for Winter Fuel Payments this year. It was announced on Monday (9 June) that everyone over the State Pension age and with an annual income below £35,000 will receive the Winter Fuel Allowance this winter.
The change has been welcomed by Knowsley Leader, Cllr Graham Morgan who had previously called on the Government to rethink its threshold for Winter Fuel eligibility. He said: “I am absolutely delighted with the news that the eligibility criteria has been expanded and that thousands of older people here in Knowsley will benefit as a result.
“I know how hard it can be for many of our residents to be able to afford to heat their homes through the winter months. It causes so much anguish and worry for people. Therefore, I am delighted with this announcement, and that the Government has recognised the financial challenges facing so many this winter.
“Whilst this change does not support all our pension age residents this will impact the majority of older people in our borough and hopefully put to rest some of the major concerns that I know many people have been feeling.”
Winter Fuel Payments are worth £200 per household, or £300 per household where there is someone aged 80 or over.
At a meeting of full Council back in October 2024 the Leader of Knowsley Council expressed his concern about the impact of changes to the Winter Fuel Allowance eligibility and agreed a notice of motion calling on the Government to rethink its plans. He also urged Knowsley pensioners to ensure they weren’t missing out on Pension Credits or any other benefits they might be entitled to. As part of efforts to ensure older residents continued to stay warm and well the Council also supported Knowsley MP, Anneliese Midgley and Citizens Advice Knowsley to run a series of drop-in sessions to support older residents.
I’m a pensioner, what do I need to do next?
No pensioner will need to take any action as they will automatically receive the payment this winter
For those with incomes above the threshold it will be automatically recovered via HMRC.
What other support could I receive?
Pension Credit gives you extra money to help with living costs if you’re over State Pension age and on a low income. It can also help with housing costs. To see if you are eligible, use the Pension Credit calculator on the Governments website.
