There are a wealth of career opportunities available to children and young people in Knowsley. We’ll be featuring a range of different jobs over the coming months to help to inspire young people about the choices available to them and what they need in order to achieve their dream job.
This month, we’re featuring a number of Government Services jobs – Border Force Officer, Dog Handler and Environmental Health Officer.
Border Force Officer
Border Force Officers protect UK border entry points like ports and airports by enforcing immigration and customs regulations.
You can get into this job through:
- a college course (such as a Level 3 Diploma in Public Services)
- an apprenticeship
- working your way up
- applying directly
- a graduate training scheme
You’ll usually need 4 or 5 GCSEs at grades 9 to 4 (A* to C), or equivalent, for a Level 3 course.

Dog Handler
Dog handlers work with specially trained dogs to help detect and prevent crime, find lost or missing people and protect property.
You can get into this job through:
- a college course (a Level 2 or 3 Diploma in Animal Care or Animal Management or a T Level in Animal Care and Management)
- an apprenticeship
- working towards this role
- applying directly
You’ll usually need:
- 4 or 5 GCSEs at grades 9 to 4 (A* to C), or equivalent, for a level 3 course
- 4 or 5 GCSEs at grades 9 to 4 (A* to C), or equivalent, including English and maths for a T level

Environmental Health Officer
Environmental Health Officers make sure people’s surroundings are safe, healthy and hygienic.
You can get into this job through:
- a university course – You can study for a degree qualification approved by the Chartered Institute of Environmental Health. If you already have a degree in a related subject you could get into environmental health careers through an accredited postgraduate course. With a degree you can gain direct entry to the Chartered Practitioner programme. This leads to registration as a Chartered Environmental Health Practitioner.

You’ll usually need:
- 2 to 3 A levels, or equivalent, for a degree
- a degree in any subject for a postgraduate course
