Opportunity to join the Kirkby Town Board

by Gemma Melling

There’s still time to help to shape Kirkby’s future by apply to be on the Kirkby Town Board.

It’s such an exciting time for Kirkby.  In 2019, Knowsley Council invested £43.8m to purchase the town centre (supported by a £10m contribution from the Liverpool City Region Combined Authority) in order to kick-start its development.

Since then, a 94,000 feet2 retail development has been completed, and has attracted more businesses and visitors into the town.  Over 500 new jobs have been created for local people, the local economy has been boosted by £15.3m per annum, Kirkby Market has benefited from £50,000 investment, footfall in Kirkby Town Centre has increased by 160% since 2019, work is nearing completion on the transformation of the multi-storey car park into a “travel hub”, and plans are progressing for a range of high-quality new homes in the town, as well as retirement living apartments for the over 60s.

But this is just the start – Knowsley Council will be receiving £20m under the Government’s Long-Term Plan for Towns programme to invest in local people’s priorities over a 10-year period.

The Kirkby Town Board will develop and implement a Long-Term Plan for Kirkby, setting out a vision for the town and priorities for investment and regeneration.  Guidance from the Department for Levelling Up states that Town Boards will be “run by local people for local people and bring together residents, business and community leaders to devise and agree a shared vision for the future.”

Would you like to get involved with Kirkby’s development and future prosperity?  If so, we’d like to hear from you.

The Board will include representatives from:-

  • Community partners – local community groups, faith groups, and charities;
  • Local businesses and social enterprises, including key local employers and investors;
  • Cultural, arts, heritage and sporting organisations;
  • The local public sector – schools, police, and health representatives; and,
  • The local Member of Parliament, Knowsley Council, and the Liverpool City Region Combined Authority.

Appointment to the Board will be on a voluntary basis and will commence from April 2024.  The Board is expected to meet on a quarterly basis.

Max Steinberg CBE DL, Chair of the Kirkby Town Board said, “We are looking for people with a range of experience and skills, who have a passion for Kirkby, and who want to be involved in the town’s long-term development and prosperity.

“If you want to help to shape the future of where you live, work or visit, then please get in touch.”
