Notify the council if your circumstances change

by Laura Johnston

It’s really important that you notify the council if your circumstances change as it could affect certain discounts you’re entitled to.

For example, you can receive a discount of 25% to your Council Tax bill if you are the sole occupier in your property.

To ensure the council has accurate information about residents who are claiming a sole occupier discount, letters will be sent out from 8 June 2026 asking them to confirm their details.

The 25% sole occupancy discount can be claimed where there is only one adult aged 18 or over living at a property.

If you have a partner, tenant, lodger or relative who has moved in, even on a temporary basis, you need to notify the council. Also, if your child has turn 18, this also means your circumstances have changed.

This review will ensure that council records are up to date and gives you the opportunity to confirm that your details are correct or if they need amending to include other adults living in the property.

The letter will include instructions on how to complete the online declaration form.

If you are no longer entitled to the discount and you complete the form by 5 July, you can enter 8 June 2026 as the date your discount should end.

If you provide this date by 5 July, we will not carry out any further checks.

Further information about the sole occupancy discount can be found on the council’s website.

If you are unable to use the online form, please contact the council on 0151 443 4476 between 9am to 4.45pm, Monday to Friday.
