Meningitis B vaccination programme launching for young people – make sure you or a loved one is protected

Many young people (under 25) are now able to access a new meningitis (MenB) vaccine offer until December 2026.

The one-off vaccine programme has three different eligibility groups, and these are:

• young people aged 17-18 (born between 1 September 2007 and 31 August 2008)
• all undergraduate freshers (born on or after 21 July 2001) who will be attending university for the first time in autumn 2026
• those aged 25 and under (born on or after 21 July 2001) who are starting further education for the first time in autumn 2026 and who will be living in further education accommodation or halls of residence

The vaccine programme has been launched in response to recent meningitis outbreaks in the UK and aims to ensure that students are protected ahead of the first semester.

Eligible young people will need two doses of the MenB vaccine for protection, with the first being offered from 20 July and the second dose from August.

How to book

The MenB vaccination is available in pharmacies.

Those aged 17-18 will receive a letter with booking information. Alternatively, they can use the online booking system: https://www.nhs.uk/nhs-services/vaccination-and-booking-services/book-a-menb-vaccination-appointment

All other eligible young people can access a walk-in pharmacy appointment (residents are advised to phone ahead to ensure vaccine stock availability). A list of participating Knowsley pharmacies is at the bottom of this page.

Cllr Christine Bannon, Knowsley Council’s Cabinet Member of Health, said: “Already this year we have seen a number of tragic deaths associated with outbreaks of Meningitis B in the UK .”

“This vaccine programme is aimed at ensuring young people attending university this year, or living in residential education settings, are fully protected against the virus.

“If you are eligible, I urge you to get both doses of your vaccination. We all have a role to play in protecting our loved ones, so I would also urge those who have family or friends who are eligible to let them know about the vaccination .”
