There has been a number of measles cases confirmed in the Liverpool City Region. Knowsley residents are urged to be vigilant to the signs and ensure they’re protected.
Measles is caused by a highly contagious virus which can infect anyone who isn’t immune. Symptoms can be severe.
Anyone, of any age, can catch measles. Measles can be particularly dangerous for vulnerable children and people.
Measles usually starts with a runny nose, sneezing, coughing and a high temperature. It may also cause red, sore eyes. The measles rash follows a few days later, starting on the face and behind the ears before spreading to the rest of the body.
What is the best protection from measles?
The MMR vaccination is the safest and best defence against measles.
Two doses of the MMR vaccine will give lifelong protection against measles, mumps and rubella. The vaccination is free and easily available from your GP.
For children, the first dose of the vaccine is typically given at 12 months of age, with the second dose at around 3 years and 4 months.
Mersey Care are also offering drop in sessions across the borough for children aged 0-5 years old. All routine childhood vaccinations are available. Find out more .
What should I do if I think I or my child has measles?
If you have any symptoms, please stay at home and call your GP or NHS 111. Do not turn up at any healthcare setting such as a GP practice, chemist, walk-in centre or A&E as this will increase the spread.
