Knowsley Highways Capital and Maintenance Investment

by Lisa Bennett

Knowsley Council’s Cabinet has approved plans to deliver a major package of highways improvements across the borough.

This includes a £6 million investment in the 2027/28 Highways Capital Delivery Programme and over £3 million for the 2026/27 Highway Asset Management Revenue Programme.

This investment will help the Council to:

  • Repair and improve roads and pavements across Knowsley
  • Make walking and cycling routes safer and more accessible
  • Deliver road safety schemes
  • Improve drainage, traffic signals and other highway features
  • Maintain the borough’s transport network

Cllr Tony Brennan, Cabinet Member for Regeneration and Economic Development, said:

“High‑quality roads and safe footpaths are a priority for the council and really matter to our residents. This funding means we can continue to improve roads and footpaths across the borough. By investing in essential maintenance and road safety, we’re making our streets safer, more reliable and better connected for everyone.”

The funding has been drawn from the Liverpool City Region’s Transport for City Regions (TCR) settlement. Following the Government’s 2025 Spending Review, the Liverpool City Region Combined Authority was awarded £1.581 billion, including £308 million for highways maintenance, road safety and sustainability schemes. Knowsley has secured £32.78 million of this funding for works between 2027/28 and 2031/32.
