Know your risk of type 2 diabetes

by Guy Murphy

Knowsley Council is supporting a campaign to raise awareness of the risk of type 2 diabetes and how to avoid it.

The joint campaign from the NHS and Diabetes UK during Type 2 Diabetes Prevention Week (20 to 26 May) will encourage residents to check their risk via the Diabetes UK Know Your Risk tool.

There are estimated to be more than 4 million people living with type 2 diabetes in the UK, and millions more are at risk of developing the condition. An increasing number of these people are under 40.

Type 2 diabetes can lead to serious health complications if left untreated. People living with diabetes face higher risk of heart disease, stroke, nerve damage, foot problems, vision loss and kidney problems.

There are some groups at higher risk of type 2 diabetes: men, people of South Asian or Black ethnicity, people who are overweight and people with a family history of type 2 diabetes.

Type 2 diabetes can be prevented by eating a healthy, balanced diet, maintaining a healthy weight and keeping physically active.

Residents who are looking for help in maintaining a healthy weight or keeping active, can visit healthyknowsley.co.uk.
