How to vote in the local elections on 7 May 2026

by Lisa Bennett

Local elections will be taking place on Thursday 7 May 2026.  A by-election for the Roby ward has also been called which will be held on the same day.

To vote in these elections, you must be registered to vote by 11.59pm on Monday 20 April 2026.

If you’ve never registered, have moved address or changed your name, register to vote online at www.gov.uk/register-to-vote.

Once you are registered, there are a number of different ways you can vote:-

Postal votes

You can apply online for a postal vote by visiting the Government’s website. You will be asked to provide your National Insurance Number.

If you are already registered for a postal vote, you don’t need to do anything. You will be contacted by the Election Team when your postal vote is due for renewal.

If you aren’t registered and you’re unable to apply online, you can apply for a postal vote by ringing the Knowsley Election Team on 0151 443 2222 or by emailing elections@knowsley.gov.uk

Completed applications must be received by the Council by 5pm on Tuesday 21 April 2026.  You must be registered to vote in order to register for a postal vote.

Recent changes have been introduced regarding the handling of postal votes. There is a limit on the number of postal vote packs that a person can hand in at a polling station and the Council offices – your own plus five for other electors – and the individual will be required to complete a form when handing in postal votes. In addition, political parties and campaigners are not able to handle postal vote packs, except where the postal vote is their own, that of a close family member or someone they provide regular care for.

Voting by proxy (allowing someone you trust to vote at a polling station on your behalf)

You can request a proxy vote application by contacting the Elections Team on 0151 443 2222 or by emailing elections@knowsley.gov.uk

Completed applications must be received by the Council by 5pm on Tuesday 28 April 2026.

Postal proxy applications must be received by the Council by 5pm on Tuesday 21 April 2026.

Voting in person at a Polling Station

There are 68 polling stations in Knowsley that will be open from 7am until 10pm on Thursday 7 May 2026. Your nearest station will be detailed on your polling card, which will be delivered to your home in advance of 7 May 2026.

You can also find where your nearest polling station is by using the postcode checker on the Electoral Commission website.

You will need to take along photo ID to vote in person (original versions and not a photocopy). Accepted ID includes a passport, a photo card driving licence, blue badge, a proof of age card, travel concessionary cards funded by the UK Government, Biometric Immigration document, Defence Identity Card or National Identity Card.

A Merseytravel local 60+ travel pass is not a permitted form of ID.  However, the Merseytravel National state pension age travel pass is a permitted form of ID.

If you have a form of accepted ID but it’s out of date, you can still use it if it looks like you.

If you don’t have an accepted form of ID, you can apply for a Voter Authority Certificate. Further details about how to apply can be found here. The deadline to apply for free voter ID is 5pm on Tuesday 28 April 2026, but you are advised to apply as soon as possible. If you need assistance, please call the Electoral Commission helpline on 0800 328 0280. You can also request a hard copy of the form by calling the Knowsley Election Team on 0151 443 2222 or emailing elections@knowsley.gov.uk
