More than 60 bags of food and other essentials were donated to Knowsley Foodbank this week, following the first civic engagement of the new Mayor of Knowsley.
Cllr Ken McGlashan, who on Friday became the Mayor of Knowsley for 2024-25, asked guests at the Mayor Making event that evening to bring donations for this good cause.
In total, 60 bags of food were donated, weighing 275 kilos – and on Wednesday, the Mayor and Leader of the Council, Cllr Graham Morgan, delivered the items to Knowsley Foodbank.
The Mayor said: “It’s been a pleasure to visit the Foodbank today to give these donated items and talk to them about the good work they are doing.
“Foodbanks like this one provide a lifeline for families at times of need, and whilst we all wish to live in a world where they are not needed, we know that, sadly, their work is crucial.
“That’s why I wanted to show them my support right from the beginning of my time as Mayor.”
And there will be much more support for local good causes throughout the Mayor’s year in office. He has named his chosen charities as The Northwest Air Ambulance, Alder Hey Children’s Hospital, and Prescot Parish Church’s Roof Fund.
All three will benefit from proceeds collected by the Mayor’s Charity Fund, with various fundraising activities taking place over the next 12 months.
This was kickstarted at the Mayor Making event, where guests donated more than £1400, and were encouraged to pledge their support to the charity throughout this year.
About the Mayor’s chosen charities
The Northwest Air Ambulance
The air ambulance aims to bring the hospital to the patient – flying the most advanced medical crew and equipment to patients where and when they need it most.
Their helicopters and response vehicles cover the entire North West, 365 days a year, responding to some of the most urgent and critical incidents. But they receive no funding from Government or the NHS, and rely entirely on donations to continue their lifesaving work.
Alder Hey Children’s Hospital
Alder Hey Children’s NHS Foundation Trust is one of Europe’s biggest and busiest children’s hospitals, treating everything from common illnesses to highly complex and specialist conditions.
Their focus is on delivering the very best health outcomes for children and young people – and they have treated generations of local children and supported families at their most difficult times.
Prescot Parish Church’s Roof Fund
The donation to the Church will go towards their fundraising target of £500,000 which the church needs to raise for the repointing of the sandstone and the repair of the nave and chancel roofs in order to keep this beautiful Grade I listed building standing for another thousand years.
