Knowsley Council’s Environmental Action Days are delivering positive outcomes for residents and communities across the borough.
The regular action days see teams from Knowsley Council and its partners join forces to tackle the most pressing environmental issues in a specific location, from littering and graffiti to fly tipping and dog fouling.
Activities at each event include clearing litter and fly tipping in hotspot areas, removal of waste and abandoned bins, cleansing and grounds maintenance inspections and sewer baiting to control the rat population in the area.
Council officers have also carried out checks on retailers, vehicle licences and conducted food hygiene inspections.
The events have featured Responsible Dog Ownership and Healthy Homes sessions, which provided a vital platform for key partners to engage with residents, offering support and guidance on a range of crucial areas, including energy efficiency and damp and mould in the home.
Environmental Action Days – key achievements
A total of 15 Environmental Action Days were held during 2024/25. These resulted in:
- 126 bin bags of litter collected.
- 119 roads across the Borough sewer baited.
- 64 licensed vehicles inspected.
- 23 licensed premises inspected and 37 food hygiene inspections conducted.
- 36 dogs microchipped and 72 dogs referred for behavioural training. 35 dogs scanned and microchip information provided to owners.
- 1244 illegal vapes seized.
- Scams assessment and protection measures implemented for two elderly residents.
- Significant volunteer contributions to local green spaces.
- Educational events for children on waste reduction and safe trick-or-treating.
- Addressed issues such as contaminated waste bins, fly-tipping, and overgrown gardens.
- Engaged with residents on anti-social behaviour and nitrous oxide.
- Provided health checks and vaccinations.
Healthy Homes Events – key achievements
- An isolated elderly resident signposted to community support networks.
- Direct engagement with residents on damp, mould, and housing disrepair, with referrals for support and repairs.
- Increased awareness and access to digital support and library services.
- Referrals for energy efficiency improvements and grant applications.
- Support for residents in accessing and utilizing the NHS App.
- Provision of housing advice and promotion of community engagement for new tenants.
Council teams involved in the action days include Environmental Health, Trading Standards, Licensing, Pest Control, Environmental Crime, Dog Warden, Waste and Recycling, Streetscene, Environmental Sustainability, Crime & Communities, as well as partners such as Livv Housing, ForHousing, Riverside Housing, Dogs Trust, Blue Cross, Change Live Grow, and the NHS.
Cllr Shelley Powell, Knowsley’s Cabinet Member for Communities and Neighbourhoods said: “Our programme of action days have been a great success and shown how we can come together with partners to make a real impact in areas across the borough. This initiative is an opportunity to take targeted action and tackle specific environmental issues in a ward, encourage behaviour change and enable communities to participate in looking after where they live and work.
“Looking ahead, we’re committed to building on this year’s success. The Environmental Action Days for the coming year will start again in June 2025 and, as well as addressing environmental issues, will be strategically planned to address social regeneration and reduce inequalities, working closely with Stronger Communities, Public Health, and Safer Communities teams.”
