Following the sad news that the Duke of Edinburgh has died aged 99, the Mayor of Knowsley, Cllr Frank Walsh has led the tributes from Knowsley.
He said:
“I am deeply saddened to hear of the passing of HRH The Duke of Edinburgh. On behalf of everyone in the borough of Knowsley, I extend deepest sympathies and sincere condolences to her Majesty The Queen and all of the members of the Royal Family.
“In his lifetime, the Duke contributed so much to the nation, not least of which was The Duke of Edinburgh’s Award, a programme designed to build the confidence and resilience of young people and one which I know a great many young people in our borough have taken part in, and benefitted from.
“As a mark of respect we will be flying the Union Flag at half-mast and we will be opening an online book of condolence so that residents can express their own tributes to the Duke.”
Knowsley pays tribute to The Duke of Edinburgh
The Union Flag is being flown at half mast in Kirkby and Huyton, and will remain so until 8am on Sunday 18 April, the day after the funeral.
In accordance with the wishes of the Royal Family, mourners are asked not to lay flowers in public places. Instead, you may consider giving a donation to your choice of charity. There is no official charity you are asked to support in memory of the Duke, but if you are unsure you may consider The Duke of Edinburgh Award Charity or the Mayor of Knowsley’s Charity, which this year is supporting Willowbrook Hospice.
A special service will take place at Liverpool Cathedral on Sunday, 18 April, 2021 at 3pm. This will be by attendance only in order to meet COVID guidelines, but it will be streamed live online via YouTube.
