Knowsley Council is marking National Empty Homes Week 2026 by showcasing its strengthened enforcement programme and new proactive strategy to tackle long‑term empty homes across the borough.
With long‑term empty homes rising nationally, Knowsley has adopted a more targeted, data‑led and enforcement‑ready approach, ensuring properties that negatively affect neighbourhoods are prioritised for action.
The council’s approach includes targeting the most problematic properties first, with homes that have been empty the longest or generate repeated complaints being fast‑tracked for enforcement.
The council is working closely with communities, using reports received from residents to directly inform investigations and build a clearer understanding of local impact.
Enforcement will continue to be balanced with support, with officers always attempting engagement first by offering advice, financial information such as VAT reductions and practical pathways to bring properties back into use.
In addition, communication is being strengthened to ensure owners fully understand their responsibilities, the expectations placed on them and the solutions available.
Cllr Tony Brennan, Cabinet Member for Regeneration and Economic Development, said: “A key priority for us is to ensure empty property are brought back into use. By addressing these properties, it improves the local area, reduces anti-social behaviour and importantly, increases the availability of affordable homes in the borough.
“We have a stronger, more proactive strategy to tackle long‑term empty homes. By increasing communication with owners, building trust within our communities and taking decisive action where needed, we are committed to reducing the number of empty homes across the borough.”
