Construction firm lends a hand to Eco Therapy Garden

by Jonathan Kearney

A construction firm delivering the Sovereign Industrial Park in Huyton recently provided practical expertise to the Eco Therapy Garden in Kirkby.

The Eco Therapy Garden is a Community Interest Company whose mission is to improve the health and wellbeing of local residents. It works to reduce social isolation and mental health issues through its therapy garden and the combined services of talking and eco therapies, and is supported by a team of local volunteers.

Last year the Eco Therapy Garden suffered incidents of vandalism that caused more than £10,000 worth of damage at their base, at Tower Hill Community Centre. The Eco Therapy greenhouse was completely destroyed, sheds broken into, planters smashed, signage torn down and children’s play equipment damaged beyond repair.

Barnfield Construction supported in various in ways, including:

  • Installing defender strips on top of the garden gate to improve security and deter further vandalism
  • Installing bird boxes to enhance the outdoor environment
  • Re-skinning the polytunnel after it had been slashed, helping restore valuable growing space
  • Boarding out a container to enable the installation of shelving and providing safer, more secure tool storage.

Eco Therapy Garden Operations & Development Manager Martin Drury said: “The guys from Barnfield did a great job for us, some general maintenance jobs, put up some bird boxes and boarded one of our existing containers out, a job that’s going to allow our volunteers better, safer access to our tools and equipment.”
