Bid submitted to become UK Town of Culture 2028

by Laura Johnston

Knowsley Council has officially submitted an Expression of Interest for Prescot to become the UK Town of Culture 2028.

The Expression of Interest was developed by the public who shared their memories, comments and ideas to help shape the town’s cultural vision for the future, as well as sharing personal stories of Prescot’s heritage.

The deadline for submitting the Expression of Interest is 31 March 2026. Shortlisted towns will be announced in spring, with the final winner revealed in early 2027.

If successful, Prescot would receive £3 million to deliver a major cultural programme in summer 2028 — an opportunity to showcase the town’s heritage, creativity and growing cultural confidence on a national stage.

Prescot is home to the iconic Shakespeare North Playhouse and has hosted a range of cultural events over the years. The town is now preparing to host a new two-day event on Friday 21 and Saturday 22 August, which brings together the popular Elizabethan Fayre and Serious Nonsense festival into one big event.
