Action taken to help prevent serious violence in our communities

by Jonathan Kearney

Intervention by community safety partners in Knowsley has potentially prevented an incident of serious violence.

Last week our Community Safety Team (previously Crime and Communities) alerted the Council’s CCTV team to monitor the area near the field at Pennard Avenue in Huyton after receiving a report from a resident about anti-social behaviour.

On Saturday evening (15 August) the CCTV team identified a male holding a machete while they were monitoring the area from the Council’s CCTV Control Room.

The CCTV team immediately alerted Merseyside Police who arrested two 16-year-old males at the scene.

The pair were charged with possession of a knife blade/sharp pointed article in a public place and possession of a controlled drug (Class B).

They have both been bailed to appear at Liverpool Youth Court on 13 October.

Cllr Shelley Powell, Cabinet Member for Communities and Neighbourhoods, said: “The action taken by our Community Safety Team and CCTV team in response to an initial resident report about anti-social behaviour has helped remove a dangerous weapon from our communities and potentially prevented serious violence taking place. The rapid response from Merseyside Police also highlights the strength of our community safety partnership approach in Knowsley.”

Knowsley has a CCTV network of more than 1,150 cameras, monitored 24/7. The Council Control room has direct access to Merseyside Police’s Command and Control Room, which means the police can be immediately notified of any incidents of crime and anti-social behaviour occurring and police patrols can be deployed accordingly.
