Work to create seven self-contained apartments for people who may otherwise end up sleeping rough is nearing completion.

Knowsley Council and social housing provider ForHousing successfully bid for funding from the Government’s Rough Sleeper Accommodation Programme (RSAP) to convert long-term vacant, council-owned, commercial property in Huyton into residential accommodation.

ForHousing has undertaken the conversion works and will be responsible for the management and maintenance of the self-contained one-bedroom units.

Tenancies through the scheme will be on a fixed term basis for a two-year period at an affordable rent.

Once in their new home, tenants will be supported by YMCA staff to access the help they need to move towards more independent living.

Cllr Tony Brennan, Knowsley Council Cabinet Member for Regeneration and Economic Development, said:

“Through the council’s partnership with ForHousing we’ve brought back into use vacant council buildings which would otherwise have remained empty to provide much needed affordable housing.

“Having a safe, secure home to call your own and being part of a community is vitally important and now through the borough’s Rough Sleeping Accommodation Programme we will provide seven self-contained apartments in Knowsley for people at risk of becoming homeless.

“Once resident in their new home, tenants will have access to the support they need to help turn their lives around and live more independently.”
