Work has now commenced on creating a sports and community hub at King George V Playing Fields in Prescot, also known as Brown’s Field.
The site has benefitted from significant investment following a successful grant of £250,000 from the Football Foundation secured by Knowsley Council, in partnership with Berkley Junior Football Club and the Friends of Brown’s Field.
The playing fields, which came back under Knowsley Council’s management on 21 October 2024, will see the replacement of the former changing rooms cabin with a new sports and community building, which will enhance the facilities for users as well as support the expansion of activities for the local community for many years to come.
As well as supporting the delivery of weekly football activities for all ages, the new building will host a range of community and recreational events and activities for people of all ages to enjoy.
Additionally, the lower grass playing pitches on the site will benefit from drainage improvement works and pitch conditioning to improve their quality.
The total cost of the scheme is £750,000 and further investment has been secured through Section 106 funding from the new housing development on the former Whitakers Garden Centre site.
The building works are due to be completed by June 2025 and the pitch improvement works delivered during April and May 2025.

“King George V playing fields is an extremely popular attraction here in the Borough and these improvement works will help to enhance the current facilities as well as extend the offer at the site.
