In November 2019, Knowsley Council took ownership of Kirkby Town Centre. In less than two years, so much has been achieved with the construction of the new retail development being a priority.
The new retail development includes a 45,000 feet2 Morrisons superstore, a petrol filling station, a drive-through KFC restaurant, a drive-through Taco Bell restaurant, a new store for Home Bargains, and a number of other new retail units ready for letting to new businesses. In addition, there will be parking for around 500 vehicles, electrical vehicle charging points, and facilities for cycle storage.
But, as well as new buildings, facilities and services in the area, the scheme is delivering so much more.
Job opportunities for local people have already been provided during the construction phase and, once fully opened, around 500 new jobs will be created.
In addition, the new retail facilities will boost the local economy by £15.3m per year.
An enhancement of the CCTV network is nearing completion with more cameras being installed which will be monitored 24/7 to provide reassurance if needed.
The retail development is a welcome addition to the already thriving Kirkby Town Centre, which is home to over 80 big brand names and independent retailers, as well as Kirkby Market with over 100 stalls offering everything from bread and wallpaper to clothing and hairdressers.
Councillor Tony Brennan, Knowsley Council’s Regeneration and Economic Development Cabinet Member, said: “It is fantastic to see the physical development of Kirkby Town Centre in such a relatively short space of time. We have been committed to delivering this retail development and importantly a supermarket for our residents and I’m delighted with the progress that has been achieved.
“In addition to the new buildings, the retail development will also deliver a range of benefits for the local area and local people, and will continue to do so for years to come.
“But this isn’t the end – our development plans for the town centre will continue, enhancing facilities for the benefit of businesses, residents, visitors, and investors alike. Nobody can doubt that Knowsley Council has kept its promise to the people of Kirkby.”
