Following recent incidents of vandalism against buses in Kirkby, Knowsley Council has joined forces with Merseyside Police, Stagecoach and the Travelsafe Partnership to appeal to residents for information.
This week council officers conducted a walkabout in the Kirkby Row and Whitefield Drive area of Kirkby, where buses have had objects thrown at them. These actions have resulted in damage to the vehicles and importantly has also put passengers and transport staff in danger.
Cllr Shelley Powell, Knowsley Council’s Cabinet Member for Communities and Neighbourhoods said:
“This behaviour is totally unacceptable and it has to stop before something really serious happens or someone is injured. Thankfully no one has been hurt by these mindless actions so far, but the risk to the public and to transport staff is just not acceptable.
“This bus service provides some of our most isolated and vulnerable residents with access to crucial medical appointments, food and provisions. Furthermore the team proving this bus service itself are working hard during these challenging times and don’t need these additional pressures.
“We are working with partners to appeal for information from our residents so we can take action. If you know anything please share it – you can remain anonymous and any information you share will be treated sensitively.”
Community Policing Inspector Peter Rexwinkel also commented:
“We have had reports of six separate incidents of anti-social behaviour directed against buses. These incidents of criminal damage are putting lives at risk. This behaviour will not be tolerated so we urge the public to come forward with any information so we can hold those responsible to account.”
If you have any information about these specific incidents or have any other issues of anti-social behaviour or you are a victim of a crime you are encouraged to report this to Merseyside Police via 101 or online here . However if there is anything you would like to discuss in confidence with our Crime and Communities Team please email Safer.Knowsley@knowsley.gov.uk
