Hillsborough campaigner Margaret Aspinall CBE was awarded with the Freedom of the Borough of Knowsley at a special ceremony on 8 January 2025. At the event, guests were shown a short film made by local schools as a special tribute and thank you to Margaret.

The film featured children from Alt Bridge School, Halsnead Primary, Our Lady’s Catholic Primary, Plantation Primary School and St Brigid’s Catholic Primary School performing a moving rendition of Liverpool FC anthem You’ll Never Walk Alone. The song, which is synonymous with the club, also conveys a powerful message of support and unity.

Cllr Graham Morgan, Leader of Knowsley Council said: “The Freedom of the Borough event for Margaret was a wonderful opportunity to recognise and celebrate the work and achievements of a truly inspirational woman and Knowsley resident.

“Everyone attending the event was particularly moved by the film that was shown featuring some of the borough’s young people singing You’ll Never Walk Alone. It was a fitting tribute and a really moving moment. It was also a lovely way to thank Margaret – not for her tireless work in gaining justice for the victims and survivors of Hillsborough but for other families who experience tragedy like this in the future. Thank you.”

Margaret was awarded her Honorary Freeman of the Borough award at a special ceremony in the Council Chamber followed by a celebration event at Knowsley Hall. The event was organised thanks to generous donations from local sponsors Huyton Asphalt and Tritax Bigbox Developments.
