The sun might not be shining just yet, but the nights are getting lighter, which can only mean one thing – spring is on its way!
With the seasons changing – now could be the perfect time to bring down the summer outfits from the attic and de-clutter your wardrobe.
Knowsley Council is making it even simpler to drop off the clothes that you no longer want or need by installing six extra textile recycling banks across the borough.
The clothing banks which are managed by Roberts Recycling, are part of an ambition to achieve a cleaner, greener Knowsley – encouraging residents to reduce, reuse and recycle more.
Cllr Shelley Powell, Cabinet Member for Communities and Neighbourhoods, said: “The new textile recycling banks have proved to be popular with Knowsley residents already recycling over 830kg worth of textiles since December, which is roughly around the same amount as 4,000 t-shirts.
“Without the new recycling banks, these clothes had the potential to end up going to waste, but instead they will be repurposed.
“I’m delighted that we are able to introduce even more textile banks across the borough, because making it easy for our residents to recycle will play a key part in reducing waste across Knowsley.”
Top tips for a spring sort out:
If the change in season has you opening your wardrobe and wondering why you wear the same few items on repeat – you’re not alone, as research shows we typically wear around 20% of what we own.
- There are two ways to start your clothes audit – either lay all your clothes out to see.
- Or instead, pick out the items you wear most because you know they’re keepers, then work with the rest of your wardrobe.
- For each item of clothing ask yourself a series of questions: ‘When did I last wear it?’ If the answer is over a year ago, now may be the time to let it go. ‘Do I feel good in it?’ ‘Does it fit me?’ are other questions to consider.
- Once you’ve made your decision, pop each item into one of four piles: keep, donate, sell or recycle.
Now the hard part is done, you may want to re-stock straight away but for the sake of the environment why not look at how you buy products to reduce your textiles waste.
You might want to consider second hand clothing apps – you can get good quality products and for a fraction of the price.
Consider quality over quantity, items that can stay with you for a long time rather than clothes which will only last a few wears are far more sustainable.
