Taking action for safer, cleaner neighbourhoods

by Jonathan Kearney

Over the last eight months, multi-agency Environmental Action Days have been taking place across Knowsley tackling issues such as litter, fly tipping, pest control and dog fouling. Running alongside the action days has been the Healthy Homes roadshow which has toured the borough to address living conditions.

The targeted action days have resulted in:-

  • 78 bin bags of litter collected.
  • 119 roads across the borough were sewer baited.
  • 24 licensed vehicles were inspected and defect or stop notices were issued.
  • 19 licensed premises were inspected.
  • 28 food hygiene inspections were conducted.
  • Patrols were carried out in dog fouling hotspots, 7 dogs were microchipped, 10 dogs were referred to animal services for behavioural training and other support, 9 dogs were scanned to confirm their microchip details were correct and a further 20 dogs were scanned and owners provided with their microchip number and guidance to update their records.
  • 157 Public Space Protection Order (Dog Control) signs were installed, encouraging dog owners to pick up after their dog and ensure dogs are on a lead in council-owned cemeteries, allotments and golf courses.
  • 20 schools took part in litter picking with 316 pupils participating.
  • Waste and fly tipping, sweeping paths and grass cutting was also carried out.
  • Visits and inspections carried out by Environmental Health, Livv Housing, and ForHousing to properties identified as needing assistance with regards to a range of issues including overgrown gardens and empty homes.
  • The Crime and Communities team engaged with communities over anti-social behaviour issues and provided crime prevention and ‘bogus caller’ advice.
  • The Recycling Team engaged with residents regarding recycling more and recycling right.
  • Trading Standards carried out tobacco control visits with Merseyside Police and HMRC.
  • Maintenance works were carried out in the borough’s parks, including new bulbs planted and environmental craft activities delivered.

Running alongside the action days were the multi-agency Healthy Homes Roadshows, helping to improve residents’ health, housing conditions and access to practical advice and support. Six community roadshows were delivered across libraries, leisure centres and cultural venues. The roadshows resulted in:-

  • Over 500 residents receiving advice and support on housing conditions, health and indoor air quality.
  • Over 50 residents were referred for specialist support including issues relating to housing disrepair cases and energy efficiency support.

Cllr Shelley Powell, Cabinet Member for Communities and Neighbourhoods, said: “Our programme of multi-agency action days bring together key partners who address pressing issues in a particular area. They cover every electoral ward in the borough and have proved to be incredibly popular and are helping to ensure that our neighbourhoods are safe, clean and welcoming.

“As you can see, by working together, we are tackling the issues impacting on our residents, taking action and encouraging behaviour change.

“We are confirming our programme from 2026/2027 which will commence in June, so please keep a look-out for when we will be in your area and come along to support and get involved.”
