Support local businesses during ‘Shop Local’ week

by Gemma Melling

This week (10-16 August) is ‘Shop Local’ week and shoppers are being encouraged to support their local retailers.

Not only does shopping local support the local economy, it maintains and creates jobs.

Retailers across Knowsley have taken steps to ensure shoppers can shop in safety. This includes the installation of posters and floor stickers to maintain a 2m distance, plastic screens at till areas, hand sanitiser stations installed, limiting the number of people in shops at any time and the introduction of one-way systems where appropriate, such as within Kirkby Market.

Everyone has a part to play in building a stronger, healthier Knowsley and helping local business to rebuild after the coronavirus pandemic. Play your part and shop local.

Shop Local Week is part of the Government’s Enjoy Summer Safely campaign, encouraging people to get back to the way of life they have missed, while following safety guidelines.

Simple safety steps should now be embedded into our daily lives including maintaining social distancing, wearing a face covering where advised and regular hand washing.

Whether it’s popping to the family butcher, getting fresh fruit and veg from the greengrocer or visiting many of the independent shops in Knowsley, by shopping locally people can help local business owners and local communities get back up and running.

In addition, throughout August, many food outlets have signed up to the “Eat Out to Help Out” scheme offering diners up to 50% off their bill if they eat out Monday to Wednesday- even more reason to shop local! Find a restaurant on the Government’s website.

Cllr Tony Brennan, Cabinet Member for Regeneration and Economic Development, said “There’s a vast range of shops and choice across Knowsley – from traditional butchers and greengrocers, to bakers, florists, clothes shops and independent stores – located in the heart of local communities. Our businesses have done an incredible job to reopen safely and I hope our residents can do their bit and shop local, helping our local businesses to bounce back from this pandemic. They need your support more than ever.”
