Worried your child eats too much sugar?

by Gemma Melling

If you are concerned about the amount of sugar in your child’s diet, a new easy-to-use app can help.

The Sugar Smart app, available to download free, helps you manage your child’s sugar intake and find out quickly how much sugar is in the food they eat.

The free app allows you to scan the barcode of a product  and it will tell you how much sugar it contains, measured in both cubes and grams.

How much sugar is safe for my child?

The recommended maximum sugar intake for children aged five is 19 grams a day – that’s five sugar cubes. But it can be difficult to know exactly how much sugar is in the food your children are eating.

That’s where the Sugar Smart app comes in – making it easy to see exactly where the sugar in your child’s diet is coming from. Once you know that, you can make an informed decision about which foods they should be eating less of.

Be Sugar Smart

Did you know that a 43g chocolate bar contains six cubes of sugar, a 200ml juice drink contains over five cubes and there are nine sugar cubes in a can of cola?

Even savoury foods can contain more sugar than you would expect – so check what they eat with the app and have a better understanding of what really goes into your child’s food.
