Smoking is still the single largest preventable cause of death in England – estimated to account for 64,000 deaths annually.
Quitting smoking is one of the most important things you can do not just for your own health, but also for your family. It’s never too late to quit smoking.
Smokers are at an increased risk of diseases, such as diabetes, heart attack, emphysema, bronchitis and stroke. Research has also identified smoking as one of twelve risk factors associated with an increased risk of dementia.
Cllr Christine Bannon, Knowsley Council Cabinet Member for Health, said:
“Stopping smoking is one of the best things you can do for your health. It has been shown to reduce the risk of developing dementia, heart disease, cancer and stroke. You experience health benefits within weeks of stopping, breathing easier and feeling fitter.
“No Smoking Day is the perfect time to quit smoking when thousands of other people are stopping too. Even if you’ve tried before and didn’t manage don’t give up on quitting because you can do it. Many smokers try several times before they succeed.
“Smokers are three times more likely to succeed in quitting with help from a trained professional than with willpower alone. Contact Smokefree Knowsley for free specialist support and advice to help you on your journey to stop smoking.”
