Start our food waste challenge for seven days during Recycle Week 2026!

by Beth Lawton

Recycle Week 2026 starts from today until Sunday 20 September. To mark the occasion and highlight the benefits of recycling – we’re challenging residents who don’t currently recycle their food waste to do it for one whole week!

Many people have already begun making the most of the recently launched food waste recycling service, but lots of households are still missing out.

So, we’re asking households who haven’t yet got out their food caddy to give it a go for just one week and see the difference it can make.

Here’s what you can expect…

How many times are you greeted by the smell of last night’s tea when you open your kitchen bin? By using your food caddy, you can reduce those smells, and the small compact caddy is much easier to change regularly due to its handy size.

You’ll also find much more room in your maroon bin, with up to 23litres worth of space in your outdoor food caddy – all that food waste would instead be taking up room in your wheelie bin, and food waste collections are weekly so food will spend much less time in your outdoor bin too.

Cabinet Member for Communities & Neighbourhoods, Cllr Shelley Powell said: “We’ve heard from so many people who were against the idea of food waste recycling, that now have a completely different opinion as they are seeing the benefits.

“By using your food caddy for just one week, I’m sure many residents will be shocked to see just how much food you throw away. Using our food waste recycling service isn’t just beneficial for the environment, but it also helps households to save money by spotting the food they waste the most and buying less.

“We think just one week will be enough to change your mind about recycling your food waste, and if it isn’t then at least you have given it a try.”

Take on our challenge for seven days and let us know what you think!
