Knowsley Council has approved a policy to provide additional business rate relief to eligible retailers across the borough.
Under the scheme eligible retailers will receive a business rates discount of one third of their bill for two years – 2019/20 and 2020/21. Eligible businesses will automatically be awarded this relief, without them needing to submit an application, and amended bills will be issued during April.
At a time when retailers are facing challenges, the council wants to ensure that the retail sector is supported as much as possible. They provide much-needed attractions and services in our communities, helping to boost the local economy.
Eligible retail premises include those with a rateable value of less than £51,000 and include a range of premises used for the sale of goods (such as florists, butchers), businesses premises used for the provision of services (such as hair and beauty services, photo processing) and businesses used for the sale of food and / or drinks (such as restaurants, takeaways, pubs and bars).
James Duncan, Executive Director (Resources), said “Our retail sector is extremely important to us and we want to ensure we can provide support to them as much as we can, which is why we are making it as easy as possible to get this relief. There are around 500 retail premises across Knowsley that could benefit from this scheme.”
