Local community groups and residents from care homes gathered to mark the anniversaries of VE and VJ Day at special celebration events organised by Knowsley Council.
The tea dances – at Knowsley Leisure and Culture Park and Halewood and Kirkby leisure centres – were an opportunity for communities to come together to mark the occasion and share their memories through food, dance and entertainment.
Around 190 residents attended the events and highlights included a dance routine from Kirkby group ‘Happy Hours’ and dancing to wartime favourites performed by singer Matt Corrigan.
Also on the guest list were Deputy Lord Lieutenant of Merseyside Liam Hanlon, Knowsley Mayor and Mayoress Cllr Ken McGlashan and Anne McGlashan who attended the event at Knowsley Leisure and Culture Park in Huyton.
Cabinet member Cllr Tony Brennan, Member Champion for Armed Forces and Veterans, joined the celebrations at the Kirkby party and Cllr Christine Bannon, Knowsley’s Cabinet Member for Health attended the Halewood event.
Knowsley Council Leader Cllr Graham Morgan said: “We thank everybody who attended the events and all those who served our nation for their vital contribution to the wartime victories. We organised these events to recognise the power of the community and offer our heartfelt gratitude for their unwavering service and the sacrifices of the wartime generation.”
