Repairs and temporary relocation of Huyton Cenotaph

by Emily Maguire

Work is due to start on the next phase of Huyton’s development plans with the demolition of two outdated Council buildings – the Computer Centre and Huyton Annexe – which will make way for development.

Prior to any works commencing, Huyton Cenotaph will be carefully removed for restoration works and a temporary memorial will be installed, located in a dedicated space opposite the original site, along with the Persecution Memorial and the flagpole currently in front of the Huyton Municipal building.

Inspection of the Cenotaph has identified significant deterioration, including several substantial cracks. Early removal ahead of any demolition works will protect the structure and allow for repair and restoration off-site.

A temporary memorial is being created which is of a similar size to the current Cenotaph and will display the names of the fallen, along with the history of the Cenotaph. The base will also include space for the laying of wreaths and will be the meeting place for services to commemorate Armistice Day and Remembrance Sunday in Huyton.

Longer-term, the restored Cenotaph will be prominently located within the newly created village green, in front of the new Council headquarters.

The Huyton branch of the Royal British Legion (RBL) has been consulted on the temporary memorial and relocation and they are supportive of the proposed plans, which are due to take place week commencing 5 October 2026.

Marie Williams from the Huyton Branch of the Royal British Legion, said “We have been working with Knowsley Council regarding their development plans for Huyton and the relocation of the Cenotaph. The repair and restoration works will help to preserve it for future years and the installation of a temporary memorial will ensure that the actions of our fallen soldiers are remembered.”
