Pupils learn about road safety at the Crucial Crew event

Over 600 pupils from 18 primary schools in Knowsley recently took part in the multi-agency Crucial Crew event – an event that aims to keep pupils safe by promoting important safety advice.

The event took place at the TA Barracks in Huyton from 13-17 June 2022 and the Council’s Road Safety Team attended, providing essential road safety advice as pupils prepare to move from primary to secondary school.

As well as road safety advice, pupils also got to know about personal safety, online safety, hate crime and anti-social behaviour.

The Council’s Road Safety Team hosted sessions that focussed on pedestrian safety. The Team simulated a crash scene which was a key discussion topic throughout the day. Children were also encouraged to think about distractions when they are out and about and to think about the potential consequences of them not giving the road their full attention.

Cllr Tony Brennan, Cabinet Member for Regeneration and Economic Development said “This is a really valuable event and helps to get across the really important message of being alert and not being distracted when out and about. The feedback we have received on our road safety session has been very positive and we will continue to share our sessions and messages, particularly as pupils will be starting their transition to secondary school from September and could be getting to and from school by themselves. Our message is clear – always give the road your full attention – distractions can be fatal.”

Cllr Margaret Harvey, Cabinet Member for Children’s Services, added “I’m delighted to support this important event and share a range of advice to help keep our children and young people safe. We’ve had some really positive feedback from our schools about the eye-catching crash scene delivered by our Road Safety Team, which grabbed the children’s attention. It importantly helped to raise awareness of and the consequences of not being aware of road safety. The structure of the session ensured that children were engaged from start to finish. Well done to everyone involved.”

The Council’s Road Safety Team are also in the process of distributing a Road Safety Transition Guide for parents and Year 6 pupils which provides a range of useful road safety advice and guidance, particularly as Year 6 pupils are starting to prepare for secondary school.

The ‘Crucial Crew’ event, organised by Child Safety Media, includes representatives from Knowsley Council, Merseyside Police, Merseyside Fire and Rescue Service and the Royal National Lifeboat Institution. It educates pupils on essential skills through practical demonstrations and discussions – all within a safe environment.
