Profiling Apprenticeships in Knowsley

by Cathy Sheel

Pupils in Year 11 across Knowsley are considering their next steps as they prepare to leave secondary school in May and June.

We have tracked the journey of one Knowsley resident who is currently undertaking an Apprenticeship in Human Resources and Payroll with Knowsley Council.

Ben, aged 24, left secondary school with ten GSCEs (Grades A* to B) and then attended Saint Francis Xavier’s Sixth Form College in neighbouring Liverpool where he secured 3 A Levels.

Ben then joined Knowsley Council as an Apprentice in March 2022.

Ben said “An apprenticeship gives me an opportunity to learn and develop whilst also obtaining a qualification in HR.

“I’ve had experience of working in HR dealing with a range of things such as recruitment, background checks as well as being involved with other HR teams, which is something I wouldn’t have had if I went down a pure academic route.

“The balance of studying and work gives me work experience which I can use both towards my studies and in later life as I progress my career.

“I currently attend the workplace 2 days a week (3 days at home for hybrid working) and I’m studying at Realise Training (online) for my HR Level 3 support qualification.

“I’d recommend an Apprenticeship to anyone – you’re learning a skill, studying towards a qualification whilst also earning a wage.

“I’m due to complete my apprenticeship in March 2024 and I’ve really enjoyed my time at Knowsley Council so would like to secure a full-time position at the Council. I can see myself being here in future years and I have the support around me to achieve this.”
