Merseyside Police’s Operation Payback initiative continues to make a meaningful impact across the region by reinvesting money seized from criminals back into the community. This month, the spotlight is on The First Step, a Knowsley-based charity offering vital support to individuals affected by domestic abuse.
Operation Payback is a partnership initiative with Liverpool Crown Court and Merseyside Police designed to put seized cash from drug dealers back into local charities that support communities.
Thanks to funds recovered under the Proceeds of Crime Act, The First Step has received a donation of over £6,000 to help expand its services and reach more people in need. The charity provides confidential support, advocacy, and practical help to survivors of domestic abuse, empowering them to rebuild their lives in safety.
Detective Sergeant Paul Doran, one of the officers involved in Operation Payback, said: “The First Step plays a crucial role in supporting some of the most vulnerable members of our community. Domestic abuse can have a devastating impact, and we’re proud to help contribute to the life-changing work this charity does every day.”
The funding will contribute to outreach programmes, counselling services, and awareness campaigns aimed at breaking the cycle of abuse and helping survivors access the support they need.
Caroline Grant, CEO The First Step added: “Demand for our services is at an all-time high, and funding to deliver support when survivors need to access support is challenging. As such we’re incredibly grateful to Merseyside Police and Operation Payback for this support. Every penny helps us reach more people, offer more services, and ensure that no one has to face domestic abuse alone.”
Since its launch in 2022, Operation Payback has returned over £300,000 to local charities and community groups, turning ill-gotten gains into positive change.
