Planning your next step if you’ve left school

by Laura Johnston

Year 11 pupils across the borough are enjoying some well-deserved time off after completing their GCSEs.

Many know exactly what they want to do – going on to further education in a sixth form or college, training or applying for apprenticeships and jobs – whilst others are undecided.

Knowsley’s Advice and Guidance Service work with local schools to ensure Year 11 students know what choices are available to them when leaving school. Advisors can help and talk you through your options – call the team on 0151 443 2898 and you will be allocated a dedicated engagement worker who will help you make the next step.

The National Careers Service website provides a range of information, advice and guidance to help you make decisions at all stages of your career. The website profiles a range of roles and what qualifications you need and what course you need to pursue the role, you can take a skills assessment test to identify careers that might suit you, plus there’s lots of case studies profiling different roles which may help to inspire you.

You can also speak to an advisor at the National Careers Service on 0800 100 900 or use webchat to talk online.  They are available from 8am until 8pm Monday to Friday and 10am to 5pm on Saturdays and Bank Holidays.

Cllr Sean Donnelly, Cabinet Member for Children and Young People, said:

“It can be a daunting time leaving school, particularly if you aren’t 100% sure on what you want to do.

“There is a lot of help and support out there though so never feel like you are on your own.

“Hearing other people’s stories and reading case studies on their career choice, reviewing the range of courses that are available and talking through your various options with specialist advisors can help you to narrow down your options.

“I’d also like to say well done to all Knowsley students who have recently sat their GCSEs and good luck to everyone picking up their results on 20 August.”
