Partnership working brings huge benefits at The Watchfactory in Prescot

by Emily Maguire

The Watchfactory Extra Care scheme in Prescot has not only brought a historic Knowsley building back into use but is also supporting hundreds of people, with care and support needs, to live safely and independently.

The purpose-built specialist housing facility is a partnership between Livv Housing Group and Knowsley Council, and provides 54 apartments and 16 bungalows which are supported by the onsite care provider, Community Integrated Care. As part of its phase two development, Livv has expanded the site with an Extra Care apartment block adjacent to the main facility, adding an additional 25 apartments. These residents also benefit from the comprehensive care services.

Cllr Del Arnall, Knowsley Council’s Cabinet Member for Adult Social Care recently visited The Watchfactory to meet with staff and residents, she said:

“It was so lovely to see first-hand the community that has been created here and the way in which this type of facility allows people to remain independent whilst still having additional support needs met. It provides such a wonderful environment for people to thrive and continue to enjoy their lives whilst also being assured that support is available when they need it.

“It’s clear from speaking to residents at The Watchfactory that they really value this and that’s great to hear. Especially as we know how important retaining independence is as people get older.”

Sarah Smith, Director of Communities at Livv Housing Group, said:

“The Watchfactory has been up and running since 2018 and through our partnership with Knowsley Council we’ve been able to deliver something special here that truly benefits the local community. Our Extra Care scheme is so much more than just a place to live, it’s a thriving community.

“All of our customers have access to a range of facilities, including a lounge and bistro, hobby room, hair salon with spa and treatment area, assisted bathrooms and a communal garden. Together with our partner Community Integrated Care, we also host a range of social activities, such as bingo, chair-based exercise, coffee mornings, arts and crafts and digital skills.”

“The care services provided by Community Integrated Care are invaluable for our customers.”

Bryony Osborne, Community Integrated Care’s Head of Operations for the North West, said:

“The Watchfactory provides 24/7 support through our dedicated team of support workers, an on-site facilities management team and assistive technologies, such as a Careline alarm service. This blended approach gives people who live here, and their families, peace of mind and enables them to have choice and control over the support they receive, remaining as independent as possible, for as long as possible.

“From thriving social clubs, award-nominated arts projects and community events, The Watchfactory has created a really special hub for people to learn new skills, have fulfilling experiences, and connect with others. The physical and wellbeing benefits of having these opportunities on their doorsteps is incredible and empowers people to truly live their best lives.”

In addition to providing tangible benefits for residents The Watchfactory development has also brought, a once derelict Grade II listed building in Prescot, back into use.  The building was previously owned by the Lancashire Watch Company which employed many people living in the Prescot area and the building has been sensitively restored, utilising much of its existing architecture.

The Extra-Care model enables residents to live independently in their own apartments with a range of on-site services available including support from care staff 24 hours a day. In the last 15 years Knowsley Council has invested significantly, with partners, to create 9 Extra-Care housing in the Borough.
