At today’s Council meeting, Cllr Shelley Powell proposed a Notice of Motion detailing the Council’s support for the LGBT Restorative Justice for Veterans’ Financial Recognition Scheme.
The motion was seconded by Councillor Graham Morgan and supported by Council.
As part of the motion Knowsley Council acknowledged the injustices inflicted on LGBT veterans arising from the UK Armed Forces Ban on Homosexuals serving in the military from 1967 to 2000.
Council also welcomed the introduction of the LGBT Restorative Justice for Veterans’ Financial Recognition Scheme.
Under the scheme, qualifying individuals can receive £50,000 for discharge or dismissal due to their actual or perceived sexuality. In addition, individuals can also apply for an impact payment (IP) ranging from £1,000 to £20,000.
Applications for the scheme close in December 2026.
As part of the motion, the council resolved to support and raise awareness of the scheme across the borough.
