New Community Food Club for Huyton

by Cathy Sheel

People facing financial hardship can seek help stocking their food cupboards with the opening of a new Community Food Club.

Growing charity Incredible Edible Knowsley, in partnership with The Big Help Knowsley Foodbank, has opened the food club at Court Hey Park, Huyton, to offer foodstuffs, home-grown vegetables and other household goods to members at discounted prices.

The club is open to everyone and members don’t have to be receiving benefits to join.

The food club offers members:

10 items for £3.50 – which means you pay 35p per item. This includes items such as coffee, nappies etc.

15 items for £5 – which means you pay less than 34p per item.

In order to ensure the club operates in a Covid secure way, would-be members are asked to email Incredible Edible Knowsley Director Karen Mower to join, and she will send you a list of items stocked by the club and an order form.

Orders can then be collected from the club during a pre-arranged time slot.

Karen said: “The food club is open to anybody, no matter what their circumstances, as we know that many people, including those in employment, will be facing hardship during these difficult times.

“Our partnership with The Big Help Knowsley Foodbank means we can offer a wide range of goods, as well as the fresh fruit and vegetables we grow on site, when they’re ready. Joining the club is a great way to reduce your shopping bill and support your local community, as the money will be going back into the community for workshops and events once restrictions have ended.”

Knowsley Council Leader Cllr Graham Morgan and Roby Councillor Margaret Harvey were among the first to visit the food club and see it in action.

Cllr Morgan said: “Incredible Edible is a great community asset and has already done much to reduce food poverty, improve health and wellbeing and educate people about food. This partnership with The Big Help Knowsley Foodbank and the creation of the food club is another fantastic example of how we can work together to bring greater benefits to those who need it most.”
