New Breastfeeding support for mums in Knowsley

by Laura Johnston

It’s not uncommon for new mums to experience challenges with breastfeeding and now a range of digital support tools from Start4Life is available to help mums in Knowsley.

The package includes a new ‘24/7 Breastfeeding Friend’ available via Amazon Alexa’s voice search service. The new service is in addition to the interactive live chat tool ‘Breastfeeding Friend chatbot’, accessed through Facebook Messenger, which Start4Life launched last year.

The Start4Life digital tools aim to guide new mums through their first weeks of breastfeeding and beyond, providing help at any time of the day or night. The digital package is designed to complement support and advice from health care professionals, breastfeeding specialists and peer support groups.

Breastfeeding boosts a baby’s ability to fight illness and infection. There are benefits for mum too, it lowers a mother’s risk of breast cancer and may reduce the risk of ovarian cancer, and also burns around 500 calories a day.

Mums-to-be and new mums can also find support in Knowsley through Bosom Buddies a friendly team of health health professionals and local mums who have breastfed their own babies and want to help other mums do the same.

Public Health England recommends exclusive breastfeeding for around the first six months. Babies who are not breastfed are more likely to get diarrhoea and chest infections.

Cllr Shelley Powell, Cabinet Member for Public Health, Wellbeing and Customer Services, said:

“Breastfeeding is something that a mother and her baby learn together, and getting the right support can help enable mums to breastfeed for longer. Mums tell us that after the first few weeks breastfeeding becomes easier, so proper support – whatever the time of day or night – is crucial in those early days and this is where the Start4Life digital support can really help.

“There’s also lots of advice, support and information available for mums in Knowsley from other local mums who have breastfed their own babies through Bosom Buddies, our peer support service.”
