Nature-inspired celebrations mark David Attenborough’s 100th birthday

Schools, residents and community groups from across Knowsley have taken part in a range of environmental activities in celebration of Sir David Attenborough’s 100th birthday.

Many schools marked the occasion by hosting litter picks, creating environmental pledges – such as going plastic-free for a day, and delivering forest school sessions and outdoor education lessons.

Local community groups were inspired to create ‘100’ signs from natural materials, many of these were created in our parks and green spaces for everyone to enjoy.

Cllr Shelley Powell, Cabinet Member for Communities and Neighbourhoods, said:

“It’s fantastic to see so many schools, community groups and residents across the borough taking part in environmental activities in celebration of Sir David Attenborough’s milestone birthday. He is a true national icon whose passion for nature and protecting our planet has inspired generations. Using nature itself to create a message marking 100 years is a wonderful way to wish him happy birthday from Knowsley.”

Want to get involved?

There’s still time to join the celebrations through the Our Planet, Our Pledge: Celebrating 100 Years of Attenborough campaign. Taking part is simple: organise or join an environmental activity and make your own pledge to protect the planet.

Ideas to get involved include:

  • Litter and waste action: Organise a school-wide or community litter pick or hold a waste‑free lunch day.
  • Learning outdoors: Go on a nature walk or visit a local park or volunteer group.
  • Creative projects: Create artwork, poetry or performances inspired by the natural world.
  • Boost biodiversity: Build bug hotels, bird feeders or wildflower patches at home, in school or within community spaces.
