National breast screening update

by Comms Team

Public Health England (PHE) is reassuring women who missed their final breast screening due to an error that they will be offered a catch up screening in the next few months.

PHE says the problem led to around 450,000 women across the country not being invited for their final test. The issue has now been fixed.

If you are affected by this issue, PHE will contact you directly by the end of this month.

You will be offered the opportunity to have the catch up screen you missed. It is expected that all rescreens will be completed by the end of October.

If you have any concerns, please ring the dedicated PHE helpline on 0800 169 2692.

The routine NHS breast screening programme invites more than 2.5m women for a test every year. Women between the ages of 50 and 70 receive a screen every three years up to their 71st birthday.

It is always important to be aware of the signs and symptoms of breast cancer, regardless of when you have been screened.
