Name our food waste trucks and give them a little personality!

by Cathy Sheel

Knowsley Council is inviting residents to come up with names for the borough’s new fleet of food waste collection vehicles.

The new vehicles will be on the road when the council introduces food waste collections in spring 2026.

The council wants each vehicle to have a different name. While schools across the borough are helping us name six of them, one vehicle is reserved for YOU – our Knowsley residents.

The chosen names will be proudly displayed on the vehicles, and winners will be invited for a photo opportunity with their named vehicle.

The competition runs from 10 November until 19 December and winning names will be announced in February 2026.

Cllr Shelley Powell, Knowsley’s Cabinet Member for Communities and Neighbourhoods said: “We want our residents to get involved with the new food waste collection service we’re introducing next year, and a fun way they can do that is to help us name our vehicles. Names must have a food waste or recycling theme, and I look forward to reading all the entries. Thank you!”

Following the introduction of the new service, residents will have separate collections for garden waste, recycling, general waste and food waste. The new food waste collection is being fully funded by the government and will be weekly to ensure there are no issues with smells, pests etc.

Every year, over ten million tonnes of food is wasted in the UK. By separating food waste from other household rubbish, it can be sent to special facilities (digesters) that turn it into green energy. This will help power homes and businesses and reduce harmful greenhouse gas emissions.
