Volunteers at Jubilee Park in Huyton have planted a small orchard as part of an ongoing project to create four new community orchards across the borough.
The Jubilee Craftivists were one of four groups who secured funding to plant fruit trees at the park, as well as carry out ground preparation, site protection and irrigation works – securing the future of the orchard.
Mayor of Knowsley, Cllr Ken McGlashan was on hand to help the group plant the 12 new trees. This has followed the creation of community 
orchards at Bowring Park, Court Hey Park and Halewood Park.
Knowsley Council was successful in applying for a £50,000 grant from the Coronation Living Heritage Fund in November 2023, a local tree planting initiative funded by the Department for Environment, Food & Rural Affairs (Defra).
Community groups, charities and ‘Friends of’ groups in Knowsley could apply for a share of the fund to establish a community orchard in their local area.
Cllr Shelley Powell, Knowsley’s Cabinet Member for Communities and Neighbourhoods said: “This is a fantastic initiative and something I hope members of the local community can get involved with and benefit from as part of these wonderful green spaces.”
