Man arrested after e-bike ridden dangerously in Kirkby

by Jonathan Kearney

Merseyside Police arrested a man after an electric bike was seen by patrols being ridden at speed and against traffic in Kirkby on Wednesday 7 May.

Officers on the East Lancs Road at around 9.15pm spotted a Sur-ron bike with a rider in dark clothing and a balaclava travelling on the wrong side of the road, before crossing the central reservation into traffic at speed.

It continued onto Moorgate Road before the rider fell from the bike. He was detained by officers at the scene and was taken to hospital for assessment.

A 23-year-old man from Kirkby was arrested on suspicion of dangerous driving, theft of a motor vehicle, failing to stop, drug driving, driving without valid insurance and driving otherwise than in accordance with a licence.

Roads Policing Inspector Ian Cowell said: “The risk of bikes being ridden anti-socially and dangerously can be devastating, and our officers patrol Merseyside’s roads every day to proactively stop people from risking their own safety and that of others.

“During this incident, officers who had spotted the bike were able to act swiftly to monitor the movements of the rider and detain him.

“But by far the safest way to deal with this problem is to identify where suspected stolen or illegally used vehicles are stored, so we can seize them before anyone is put at risk on the roads in the first place.

“We proactively respond to all intelligence about stolen vehicles, and I encourage anyone with information to let us know so we can take positive action.

“Each and every seizure like this one prevents further risk on the roads. If you have any information about suspected stolen or illegally owned/ridden scrambler bikes or illegal electric motorcycles, please contact us via @MerPolCC, 101 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111. Always call 999 if a crime is in progress, when it is safe to do so.”
