Make every school day count

by Gemma Melling

As families across Knowsley prepare for the start of a new school year, parents and carers are being reminded that good school attendance is one of the most important factors in helping children and young people reach their full potential.

Attending school every day gives children the opportunity to learn, develop new skills, build friendships and take part in the experiences that help them grow in confidence. Missing school regularly can have a lasting impact on learning, wellbeing and social development.

Schools work hard to create welcoming, supportive environments where every child can thrive. They also understand that families can face challenges that affect attendance and are committed to working with parents and carers to find solutions wherever possible.

Good attendance isn’t just about academic success. Being in school helps children establish healthy routines, develop resilience and enjoy the benefits of being part of their school community. Even missing a few days each term can mean children miss important lessons, activities and opportunities that are difficult to make up later.

To support families, the Department for Education has launched a series of short, easy-to-watch animations covering topics such as why attendance matters, starting school, illness guidance and building positive attendance habits.

The videos are designed to answer some of the most common questions parents have and provide simple, practical advice that can help families establish good attendance from the very beginning of the school year. Parents and carers can explore the videos here.

By working together, schools, parents and carers can give every child the best opportunity to enjoy school, fulfil their potential and build the foundations for a successful future.

This school year, let’s make every school day count.

Cllr Sean Donnelly, Cabinet Member for Children and Young People, said: “Every parent wants the very best for their child, and making school attendance a priority is one of the most important ways they can support their future. Every day in school is an opportunity to learn, build confidence, make friends and develop the skills that will help children throughout their lives.

“We know that families can sometimes face challenges, and our schools are committed to working alongside parents and carers to provide support where it’s needed. By working together and making use of the excellent advice and resources available through the Department for Education, we can help every child in Knowsley enjoy the best possible start to the new school year and make every school day count.”
