Licensing arrangements in Knowsley for big World Cup matches

by Jonathan Kearney

Licensed premises in Knowsley intending to show the FIFA World Cup are encouraged to review their licensing arrangement and plan ahead.

With the 2026 World Cup taking place in North America, many fixtures, including those involving England and Scotland, will kick off late at night UK time.

The Government has confirmed extended licensing hours for certain knockout-stage matches involving England or Scotland.

The Order applies to all premises, with either a premises licence or a club premises certificate permitting the sale of alcohol until at least 11pm on the date of the match, where that alcohol is sold for consumption on the premises.

Extensions will generally allow on-sales alcohol service:

  • Until 1am for kick-offs between 5pm and 9pm, and;
  • Until 2am for kick-offs after 9pm up to 10pm These extensions apply only to selected knockout-stage matches and do not cover all fixtures:
  • They do not apply to Group stage matches
  • They do not apply to knock out fixtures kicking off before 5pm or after 10pm
  • They only cover alcohol sales, and do not cover regulated entertainment such a live or recorded music.
