New Quit Smoking campaign launches across Cheshire and Merseyside

by Laura Johnston

The latest phase of the ‘Smoking Ends Here’ campaign is rolling out across Cheshire and Merseyside – including Knowsley, focused on providing targeted support to groups where smoking rates are historically higher, ensuring everyone has access to the help they need to quit for good.

Quitting smoking is one of the best things you can do for your health, and it’s never too late to start. The ‘Smoking Ends Here’ campaign is committed to helping the people of Cheshire and Merseyside become, and remain, smoke-free.

This stage of the campaign will include outreach to groups identified as having higher than average smoking rates, including social housing residents, to offer bespoke support and advice.

Cllr Christine Bannon, Knowsley Council Cabinet Member for Health, said:

“Stopping smoking is one of the best things you can do for your health. It has been shown to reduce the risk of developing dementia, heart disease, cancer, and stroke. You will experience health benefits within weeks of stopping, breathing easier and feeling fitter.

“We are committed to supporting smokers in Knowsley to quit for good. Research shows smokers are three times more likely to succeed in quitting with help from a trained professional than with willpower alone. The borough’s stop smoking service, Smokefree Knowsley, has lots of free, specialist support and advice to help you on your journey to stop smoking.”

When you stop smoking, your body begins to repair itself almost immediately. In just 20 minutes your heart rate will start to drop. After 24 hours, your taste and smell will improve, and within 12 weeks your breathing will improve, giving you more energy.

You can visit The Smoking Ends Here website which has free advice, information, and details of local services available across the region.
