Kirkby Gallery is currently exhibiting Northern Stone and Peat Smoke, a selection of never-before-seen pieces of art created by artist Anthony Ratcliffe.
The exhibition is a collection of Anthony’s work which includes woodcut prints, watercolours, drawings, and sketchbooks, as well as material illustrating the technical print process that was used. The art explores remote landscape and often uses contemporary poetry and text to highlight hidden parts of Northern Britain. Artwork focuses on the landscapes’ relationships with flora, fauna and seasonal elements including the recent moorland fire damage.
Inspiration for the exhibition came from drawing and materials collected by Anthony, sometimes on his own travels around Britain including Scotland and Yorkshire. Anthony pays close attention to the way landscape shows its past and usage, geology, and archaeology.
Northern Stone and Peat Smoke is Anthony’s second exhibition in Knowsley, having had his ‘Shoreline and Washed’ exhibition showcased in Huyton Gallery in 2013.
You can visit Anthony Ratcliffe’s exhibition at Kirkby Gallery until 31 August 2019.
